Data breaches continue to happen daily, and much more frequently as today’s security systems are not able to keep up the pace with attackers who are much further ahead in the battle. Protecting and securing data is foremost on the minds of companies, organizations and the world at large and is a constant struggle and concern.
Here is a timeline of the biggest data breaches, dating back to 2011:
2021: 533 million people were affected in Facebook’s April 2021 hack.
2020: In March 2020, researchers discovered an unprotected server belonging to CAM4 which was leaking nearly 11 billion records.
2019: Collection #1: 773 million email addresses and 22 million unique passwords collected from thousands of different breaches dating back to 2008.
2018: Aadhar’s data breach compromised the data of 1.1 billion India residents.
2017: Equifax’s data breach compromised the data of 145,000,000 individuals.
2016: Adult Friend Finder’s data breach compromised the data of 412,200,000 individuals.
2015: Anthem’s data breach compromised the data of 78,800,000 individuals.
2014: eBay’s data breach compromised the data of 145,000,000 individuals.
2013: Yahoo!’s data breach compromised the data of 3,000,000,000 individuals and goes down on record as the world’s largest data breach to date.
2012: OPM’s data breach compromised the data of 22,000,000 individuals.
2011: Sony PlayStation Network compromised the data of 77,000,000 individuals.
